I need
some help. I know what you are thinking and no, that is
not the kind of help I am looking for. I need help in
spending some money. I would guess that there are plenty
of people who wouldn’t mind helping. Before you all sign
up to help spend this money let me tell you a little
about the amount.
Wednesday night I made an appeal that we help a person
whose home was about to be foreclosed upon (I am not
going to repeat the entire story, however if you have
not heard it, you may go to the church web site and
listen to the complete story on the link to the sermon
for Sunday May, 27th). The short version is this: There
was a need, I didn’t know how much, you responded by
giving $1,247.00. The need was $1,246.56. God put it on
your hearts to give the exact amount of the need plus 44
cents.
What I now need is your help in deciding how to spend
the 44-cent surplus. The real dilemma is not in spending
44-cents; it is finding something to buy with the
44-cents. In the economy of our modern world a mere
44-cents simply will not carry you far. But here is the
key; we don’t operate according to the economy of the
modern world. We operate on an economy that is grounded
in eternity and based upon the foundation of loving God
and loving our neighbor as ourselves. When our economy
operates from this perspective we have no limitations,
all things are possible.
Last Wednesday I would never have dreamed that we would
collect over twelve-hundred dollars and I certainly
would have never dreamed that the amount needed would be
exactly what was collected, minus 44-cents. However the
truth is that I shouldn’t be surprised, nor should you,
because we serve a great God.
So often, we are caught in the trap of seeing the
possibilities from our own limitations. Yet when it
comes to God, our possibilities are infinite and our
limitations are nonexistent. Paul said this about
limitations, “I can do all things through Christ who
strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13) The prophet Isaiah
spoke of greatness of God when he said, “Who has scooped
up the ocean in his two hands, or measured the sky
between his thumb and little finger, Who has put all the
earth’s dirt in one of his baskets, weighed each
mountain and hill? Who could ever have told God what to
do or taught him his business?” (Isaiah 40:12&13, The
Message)
Forty-four cents. It doesn’t sound like much to you and
me. However, in God’s hands along with our obedience and
willingness it is limitless. God has a calling, a vision
that is ours. You may not think you have much to offer.
I guarantee you that it is exactly what God wants, plus
a little extra. Together, let us offer God what we have
and see His possibilities.
